We offer these respectfully irreverent Peak Bag 2021 awards, knowing that somber tones have their moment, but it's Omondi's laughter that will outlive us all.
Kate et al…Best use of a fuchsia shirt in a supporting role. Shortest distance to happy hour award.
Lisa and Nick : Peak most likely to appear in a GQ ad. Most sophisticated peak award. The shaken, not stirred award.
Jonathan…The international relations award. The Olympic kidnapping award. Hair most likely to be mistaken for an Inquisitor award. Most likely to become a British barrister award.
Pearl – Closest to Omondi hometown award. Best technology award for selfie on the run.
Kendra…the incognito award. Best sunglasses in a leading role award. Urban outfitter award for exceptional urban application of rural names.
Tim…The upside down award. Not quite as far south as Antarctica award. Getting a head start on Movember award. Best facial hair in a leading role.
Stephanny- Mother Nature can be an ornery ol' gal award. Grace under pressure award. Most likely to be mistaken for a dating ad award.
Dan…Skiing is Dartmouth award. Runner up - closest to Hanover award.
Laura et al…Best use of Dartmouth campus award. Closest to Hanover award. Best ad for Dartmouth co-op award.
Moosilauke gang – really, just one: Granite of New Hampshire in their brains award. Back-up “Couldn’t come up with a new peak idea award.”
Nick – Best gold retriever in a supporting role. Pulitzer fiction award for best attempt to convince people that a dead-flat area has elevation.
Mary and Tom – Most likely to be mistaken for an LL Bean ad. Most easterly peak bag in US.
Kate – the youngest alumna (that we know of) participation award. The Dartmouth jewelry award.
Val – The “I caught a fish this big” award. The Madonna “strike a pose” award.
Danielle – the ASPCA award for carrying their dog up the entire peak. The Boston suburbs award.
John – The “Hey, where’s Tom Brady” award. Oscar for best costume design for superior blending with peak background. The camouflage award for best blending with peak. Best use of hand-signs in a supporting role.
Michelle – The “didn’t John say he would meet me here” award. The Vogue meets Town & Country award.
Patrick – the Highlander “there can be only one” award. The Heathcliff Scottish moors award.
Alex – The Tour de Italy award. The “totally hardcore” award.
Steve et al – The PT Barnum award for largest traveling circus award. Oscar for best casting (where did he get all those people?). The “our grey vista is better than your grey vista” award. The youth participation award.
Brad, Pamela, Jeff, Steve – The Dartmouth sports team award for most teams represented in a single peak bag (heavies, lights, women, skiing). Oscar for best original screenplay for an authentic freshman ’88 shirt. The Right Said Fred award for being too sexy for our dog.
Zoe and Isabelle – the James Cook award for southerly exploration. The “beat this” award. The freezer award for coldest peak bag. The Ansel Adams award for most amazing panorama.
Kris – The Peak peak bag award for highest ascent. The top of a continent award. Oscar for best production design for having a Peak Bag shirt at the top of Africa.
Glenn – Most Moving Sentiments award for his heartfelt tribute to those who have struggled with mental health issues.
Bill – Best actor in a lead role for his new film “Out of Ladakh”. The “been everywhere in the world” award. The Yeti Award for combining Peak Bag with pursuit of Himalayan creatures.
Bob – The frat basement award for bagging the peak with the highest concentration of bars. The WKRP award for actually finding a peak in Cincinatti.
Debbie and Fred – The American history award for including the Jefferson Monument in their peak bag photo. The cool contradictions award for turning a flat reflecting pool into a peak bag..
Elena – The Bridges and Tunnels award for….well, its pretty obvious.
Kristin, Bret and family – the All in the Family award. The Nationwide Hope and Inspiration award.
Jon and Phil — The seat racing substitution award. The cannabis free San Francisco getting high award.
Kristen and Kate – The clothing retailer award for hiking a trail named Lands End. The wisdom award for not cycling with Jon and Phil.
Diane. – The topography award for 3 totally different vistas in a single Peak Bag. Oscar for best cinematography for 3 totally different vistas in a single peak bag.
Catherine – award for best poodle in a supporting role. Beach bag award.
Brians – The Department of Name Redundancy Department award. The B.S. award…you figure it out.
Dave – The X-files award for combining peak bag with alien exploration. The “I know they’re out there somewhere” award.
Ken – The community peak bag award for recruiting multiple town dads to his Peak bag. AKA Most likely to hold a summit PTA meeting. The “hang gliding 2 yrs in a row would have been pushing it” award.
Julie – the award for best coordinated shirt and hat..
Katie - the hard core running award.
Elizabeth - the “just waiting for the snow” award
Bart and Dave – the still nuts award. The Coloradans can kick anybody’s ass award. The CKA (Coloradans Kick Ass) award. The most likely to compete in the Tour de France award. Must we go on (because they did)?
But here's the thing, says this wise young peak bagger named Aaron.
In one sense, it doesn't matter exactly WHAT peak we each bagged today, or how fast we bagged it. High, Low, Fast, Slow...?
Point is:
"Omondi would have loved this hike. And I would have loved to hear his laugh booming through the fog."
Indeed.
